A Note from the Congregation

Greetings:
We are the members of First Christian Church in
Purcell, OK and we welcome you to our Web home page. We invite
you to stroll through these pages so that you might have the
opportunity to become more familiar with our local
congregation. We are a small congregation, but we are also
a "church on the GROW" and invite you to come visit us this
Sunday for our weekly service of worship, beginning with Sunday
School at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:50 a.m. Purcell is located
in the heart of Oklahoma, just 35 miles south of Oklahoma City,
on Interstate 35. The church is located on the northeast corner of
2nd and Washington and can be easily found using these
directions: 3 blocks east of "Carl's Jr." on the north side of the
street, but if you should get lost, just ask someone where the
gray church with the "red cup" on the building is located, and they
should be able to direct you. Also, call the church at 405-527-3006
for directions.

We are a small membership church affiliated with the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ), a mainline denomination with over
4500 congregations in the U.S. and Canada. Disciples are one
of the largest denominations with roots on American soil. Our
General offices are in Indianapolis and our Regional offices are
in Oklahoma City.

We invite you to consider the following points about
the First Christian Church....
1. Jesus Christ is our Lord. Our central conviction is reflected
in the simple confession of Peter, "You are the Christ, the Son
of the Living God". (Matthew 16:16) This public confession and
water baptism are our ONLY requirements for membership.
2. We believe that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God. We are "saved" only by the grace of God. As a result of this
understanding we are called to examine the log in our own eye before
we become concerned about the speck in our neghbor's eye. We
don't judge the actions of others, we leave the judgement to God.
3. We have no "creeds" or unyielding doctrines. Individuals have
the privilige and responsibility to work out their own credos
(statements of belief) in light of scripture and tradition. We
neither require nor tolerate "litmus tests" of faith. Public
confession of Jesus as Lord is all that is required. When we
disagree on matters of faith and practice of faith, we do so in love.
We celebrate the diversity that God has created in the world
and we do not find it to be the cause for division. We have long
proclaimed, "in faith, unity; in opinions, liberty;
 in all things, love".
4. There is no requirement for rebaptism. We practice baptism
of "believers" by immersion but we accept and recognize all modes
of baptism, believing that God is active and present in all forms
of Christian baptism in the Church universal.
5. We celebrate the Lord's Supper EVERY Lord's Day. It is the
central experience of our worship. The Table is open to ALL who
believe, and we welcome our sisters and brothers from all
denominations to participate.
Because we believe we are "Christians only" and not the "only
Christians", many families with diverse backgrounds and
understandings find a home at First Christian.

Persons seeking a fellowship based on love rather than doctrine
will find it here. Those who believe that the church should engage
the mind and heart, provide vital worship opportunities, enable faith
development and be actively involved in mission outreach,
will want to be a part of the caring family at First Christian.

Our hope is that you will prayerfully consider placing your
membership with our church as we seek to praise and serve our
Lord together.

The "Stuff" We're Made Of...

Many people wonder what this church, with the "big red cup with an "X" in it on the side of your building", actually believes in. It might be best summed up by providing the reader with a look at the document that defines most of the churches bearing the name of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. This document is called "The Design For the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)".

AS MEMBERS OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH,

We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world. In Christ's name and by His grace, we accept our mission of witness and service to all people. We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in the covenant of love which binds us to God and one another.Through baptism into Christ we enter into newness of life and are made one with the whole people of God. In the communion of the Holy Spirit we are joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ. At the table of the Lord we celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ. Within the universal church we receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture. In the bonds of Christian faith we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose kingdom has no end. Blessing, glory, and honor be to God forever. Amen.--From the Preamble of the Design for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
